Let’s face it: junk cars break down. It’s unavoidable. Of course, if you have an old junk car that’s so beat up, worn out, and rusted over that there’s no point in fixing it, you might as well sell your junk car rather than putting any more time or money into it.
Even if it’s sensible to repair your vehicle (given the ratio of its value to the cost of repairs), an expensive trip to the mechanic can still be a real pain. Sometimes, though, you don’t have any choice but to have your car towed in to the nearest garage.
That said, what happens when your car breaks down when you’re running late to an appointment? Or, what if you’re in the middle of nowhere and something springs a leak? It’s not always possible to get your vehicle to a mechanic right away. In these sorts of situations, knowing a few quick DIY car repair hacks can be a lifesaver.
For this reason, we’ve put together this list of our top 10 car repair hacks.
Broken fan belt? Use a piece of panty hose to replace it temporarily.
Always keep duct tape in your trunk! By twisting a piece of duct tape together, you can fashion a makeshift belt.
Cracked headlight? If you’re just trying to make it home, a piece of clear tape (or red tape, depending on the light in question) can work in a pinch. Be sure to replace it ASAP, though.
Over time, headlights begin to get cloudy and dim. Toothpaste can work wonders here: use it to scrub the headlight casing, then rinse off the residue.
Tired of your windows fogging up? Fill up a sock with cat litter and keep it in your car. No kidding!
There’s nothing worse than trying to scrape ice off your windshield in the cold. To avoid this hassle, spray a 2:1 vinegar to water solution onto your windshield. The ice will come right off! Be warned, though: the vinegar can wreak havoc on your paint, so don’t let it get on the body of your car.
If you don’t have an ice scraper and need to clean off your windshield, an old credit card will do the trick.
Trying to get a sticker off your window? Wet a piece of newspaper until it’s soaked through, then apply it to the sticker for about 15 minutes. Once the sticker is nice and wet, it’s easy to remove.
Snow tires are made of softer material, which allows them to grip the road better in the snow. Letting the pressure out of your tires (a small amount) can make it easier to drive in snowy conditions. Keep in mind, though, that this shouldn’t be taken as a substitute for legitimate snow tires.
Speaking of snow, getting stuck in slush and ice happens to all of us at some point. Getting out doesn’t have to be impossible, though. Grab some cardboard, throw it down in front of and behind your tires, and use it for extra traction. Be careful, though: revving your car too hard could send one of the pieces of cardboard flying.
We hope these car repair hacks are helpful in a pinch! Of course, some vehicles aren’t worth fixing. If you’re ready to sell your junk car, Rusty’s Auto Salvage is here to help!
